How this GPA calculator works
Each letter grade is converted to points on the standard 4.0 scale. Your unweighted GPA is the credit-weighted average of those points. Your weighted GPA adds +0.5 for honors classes and +1.0 for AP® or IB classes before averaging. The bonus is applied to passing grades only.
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A- | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C- | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ / D / D- | 1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7 |
| B- | 2.7 | F | 0.0 |
Formula: GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits.
Schools differ. Some use a 5.0 scale for AP classes, give A+ a 4.3, or don't weight honors at all. If your school's handbook gives a different scale, its official GPA will differ from this estimate.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA treats every class the same on a 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes, usually +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, so it can go above 4.0.
Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?
Many colleges recalculate GPA their own way, often using core academic classes only. Reporting both and taking challenging courses is the safest approach.
Does an F in an AP class get the weighting bonus?
In this calculator, no. Most schools only add the bonus to passing grades, so an F counts as 0 either way. Check your school's handbook, as policies vary.
Is an A+ worth more than 4.0?
On the standard scale used here, A+ and A are both 4.0. Some schools use 4.3 for an A+; if yours does, your GPA may be slightly higher.
