The formula
Your course grade after the final is a weighted average: final grade = current × (1 − w) + exam × w, where w is the final's weight. Solving for the exam score:
Score needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
Example: you have an 85%, the final is worth 20%, and you want a 90%. You need (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 110%, so a 90 is out of reach without extra credit. The most you can reach is 85 × 0.8 + 100 × 0.2 = 88%.
Use your grade on everything except the final as "current grade", and the final's share of the total course grade from your syllabus as its weight.
Frequently asked questions
How is the required final exam score calculated?
Required score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. For example, with an 85% now, a final worth 20% and a target of 90%, you need (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 110%.
What if the result is over 100%?
Then the target is out of reach on the final alone, unless there is extra credit. The calculator also shows the highest grade you can still reach.
What if my current grade already includes some of the final's category?
Use your grade on everything except the final, and the final's percentage of the total course grade from your syllabus.
